To become Canadian Citizens

Being a Canadian citizen, it means a lot. Becoming a Canadian citizen is not just acquired a citizenship, it rather become a member of Canadian society with the active participation. As can be seen in the “Message to the Readers” of the Canadian Citizenship Book, Discover Canada, becoming a Canadian citizen is described as a role in the continuing history of past settlers who have built up Canada’s long tradition. This means that Canadian citizen has a sense of belonging to Canadian society and promises active participation and contribution to Canadian society. Before applying for Canadian citizenship, it is necessary to seriously think about what “Being a Genuine Canadian” means.

* It’s about having an ongoing commitment and obligation to the country.

The meaning of Genuine Citizens

What is a genuine Canadian citizens

  • Canadian citizens who fulfill the duties and responsibilities
  • Active participation in Canadian society and the Canadian contribution to those members of society
  • Canadian citizens who live in Canadian society with having a sense of belonging rooted

Determine your eligibility

  • be a permanent resident (landed immigrant) of Canada
  • have been physically in Canada for at least 1095 days in the 5 years immediately before you apply
  • have filed personal income taxes for at least 3 years within the 5-year period, if required under the Income Tax Act
  • demonstrate you have knowledge of Canada (if you are between 18 and 54 years old when you apply)
  • demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French (if you are between 18 and 54 years old when you apply)

Application for Canadian citizenship -Adult(18 years of age and older)

    • Colour photocopy of all pages (valid or expired) of your passport(s) or travel document(s) during your (5) year eligibility period
    • Photocopy of proof of English or French language ability if you are 18 to 54 years old:
      • results of a third-party language test
      • diploma, certificate or transcripts from a secondary or post-secondary education program in Canada or abroad, where the language of study was English or French
      • proof that you have reached the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 4 or higher through a government-funded language training programs
    • Two (2) photocopies of personal identification
    • Two (2) identical citizenship photos
    • Application fee: $630.00 (adult)
    • Police certificate where you were present for a total of 183 days or more while in the 4 years immediately before the date of your application

    • Photocopies of biographical pages of passports you had in the past 5 years
    • Two pieces of photocopy of personal identification (one of which must have a photo on it)
      • School record
      • Health Insurance card (OHIP)
      • hospital or immunization record
      • A passport
    • two (2) identical citizenship photos
    • Application fee: $100.00 (minor)
    • One poof of the parent’s Canadian citizenship (if applicable)
    • Police certificate where you were present for a total of 183 days or more while in the 4 years immediately before the date of your application (if applicable, 14 years old and over)

Citizenship Test

Citizenship test includes a written test and an oral test. According to the current regulations, applicants must take a citizenship test the age between 18-54.

    • Written test: 20 questions (passing score: 75 points / 15 questions that should be adjusted)
    • Oral test: should be able to speak with adequate knowledge

Citizenship Oath

Applicants who pass a written test and an oral test will be notified about the oath of citizenship. After the citizenship ceremony, applicants will receive a certificate of citizenship. Minors under 14 years of age are welcome to attend the citizenship ceremony.

Canadian Passport

On July 2, 2013, Canada’s passport program became part of Citizenship and Immigration Canada. If you apply for Canadian Passport, you usually visit passport Canada, but you also may visit ‘Service Canada’ or ‘Canada Post’.

Apply for a new adult passport in Canada

All new Canadian passports issued are 36-page passports. To apply for an adult passport, you must be 16 years of age or over.

Eligible Guarantor 

  • Hold a Canadian Passport that is valid or
  • Has been expired for no more than one year, on the day you submit your application
  • Have known you (the applicant) personally for at least two (2) years
  • Be a Canadian citizen 18 years of age or older
  • Provide the requested information contained in his or her passport
  • Be accessible to Passport Canada for verification

  • Reference should be a person who has known you for at least two years but not be a relative or family

Renew an adult passport in Canada

Apply for a child’s passport in Canada

All Canadian children under the age of 16 need their own passport to travel. Your child’s passport will be valid for a maximum of 5 years and it is valid until it reaches its expiry date. You can’t renew your child’s passport. You must get all the documents ready and apply for a new one.

Receiving the passport

The passport (and any original documentation you submitted) will be returned to you by mail; and may be in two separate packages. If you applied in person and paid for a pick up service, the pick up date will be indicated on your receipt.

Pick-up and final steps

  • Make sure that all the personal information listed on the document is correct.
  • Sign your name in ink on the signature line on page 3.
  • Add your address and emergency contact information at the bottom of page 4 write.
