Status in Canada is not jeopardized from leaving an abusive relationship.

Sponsored Permanent Residents or Sponsored Canadian Citizens

Contrary to a batterer¡¯s threats, survivors in this status category cannot be deported for leaving an abusive relationship.

Non-Permanent Residents

Survivors in this status category risk deportation from Canada if they leave an abusive relationship. This includes survivors who are:

  • in-progress permanent resident applicants
  • refugee claimants
  • live-in caregivers
  • temporary status holders
  • living in Canada with no immigration status
